Harnessing the Power of PS5 Hardware: Running Qwen 27B Neural Network on a Jailbroken PS5
Innovative development in the gaming community often pushes the boundaries of hardware capabilities, and one recent project exemplifies this spirit. By leveraging a jailbroken Sony PlayStation 5, a developer has successfully transformed the console into a high-performance AI workstation capable of running advanced language models locally. This article explores the technical journey, modifications, and capabilities of this groundbreaking project.
Transforming PS5 for AI Computation
Originally, the PS5’s open-source homebrew community introduced PS5LM, a port of llama.cpp designed to run on the console’s CPU. While functional, this approach was limited by the PS5’s memory capacity—approximately 6 GiB—and the processing power available on the CPU, restricting model size and speed.
The developer’s innovative approach involved forking the original project and modifying it to utilize the PS5’s GPU via Vulkan through the RADV driver. This shift from CPU to GPU execution unlocked significantly more memory and processing potential, enabling larger models and faster inference speeds. The native application now boasts access to roughly 11.4 GiB of GPU memory, facilitating the deployment of large-scale models such as Qwen 3.8 27B, Gemma 4 E4B, and Llama 3.2 3B, with performance metrics reaching up to 20 tokens per second on the Qwen 27B model.
Key Features of the Enhanced PS5 AI App
-
Comprehensive Dashboard: Users can monitor real-time statistics, including token generation speed, GPU and CPU utilization, power consumption, temperature levels, and fan speeds. Additionally, it displays memory allocation details between the active model and key-value caches.
-
Model Management: The app supports loading any GGUF format models stored on internal storage, USB drives, or M.2 expansions. Before loading, it indicates the required context size and whether the model fits within available memory constraints.
-
Seamless Model Acquisition: Browsing Hugging Face’s repository directly from the console allows users to check model compatibility, initiate downloads with resume support, retries, and SHA-256 verification, ensuring integrity and a smooth experience. A dedicated downloads queue simplifies management.
-
Web-Based Interaction & API Access: Users can interact with the language models through a web UI accessible from any device at
http://<console_ip>:8081, or via an OpenAI-compatible API, enabling integration into various applications. Vision capabilities are supported with Gemma 4. -
Intelligent Resource Planning: The application automatically determines the optimal combination of context length and cache type based on free memory, maximizing efficiency and avoiding resource conflicts.
-
Additional Utilities: Settings, logs, and other management features are included for user customization and troubleshooting.
Hardware & Software Requirements
To implement this setup, the PS5 must be jailbroken with etaHEN, along with the installation of kstuff and ShadowMountPlus. The use of elfldr and ftpsrv is recommended to facilitate file management and transfer.
Development and Contributions
The developer has submitted a pull request to the original PS5LM repository to incorporate this new native GPU-based app. While it has not yet been merged, interested users can access and test the code via the dedicated GitHub repository: https://github.com/abhi245y/PS5LM-Plus.

Conclusion
This project exemplifies how open-source innovation and community-driven development can extend the capabilities of gaming hardware into the realm of high-performance AI computing. Running sophisticated language models like Qwen 27B directly on a PS5 not only demonstrates the versatile power of the console but also opens new avenues for AI enthusiasts and developers seeking portable, dedicated AI environments.
